Comvette Chassis

The chassis base-plate is a custom laser-cut, clear, .118" thick Acrylic plate. It attaches to the original OEM mounting points for the BOSE head unit using the original OEM hardware. No modifications to your car are required.

The chassis face-plate is a custom laser-cut, clear, .118" thick Acrylic plate. The touch-screen, volume control and USB jack attach to the face-plate. The face-plate attaches to the base-plate using #4-40 countersunk phillips screw and 1-1/4" hexagonal standoffs.

The chassis overlay is a custom laser-cut, .059" thick Acrylic two color (black on white) plate. It hides the assembly hardware on the face-plate behind it. It is etched with with the word "VOLUME" using a font that closely mimics the OEM font used elsewhere on the dashboard exposing the white substraight behind the black layer. The white substraight is translucent and can be back-lit if desired to make the word "VOLUME" glow.

raspberry pi 3 model b

Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+

The Raspberry Pi is the heart of the BOSE head unit replacement project. This little microcomputer runs a full Linux distribution and has enough computing power to handle just about anything your can ask of it. It also uses very little power and requires very little space, making it a perfect fit for use in your car.

2x20 dupont housing female

2x20 Dupont Connector Housing

Making a large number of connections to the Raspberry Pi GPIO pins can be tedious and error prone. Instead of making connections one at a time with single pin Dupont jumper leads, why not put all of your connections into a 2x20 Dupont female connector housing? With this connector housing all your GPIO connections can be made at once. This makes connectiong and disconnecting your Raspberry Pi easy and error free. The connector housing even lets you rearrange the connections as your project evolves.

DC to DC Converter

DC to DC Converter

The Raspberry Pi runs on 5 volts DC which means that it can't be powered directly from your car's 12 volt DC system. This little converter takes your car's 12 volt DC as input and provides a 5 volt DC output. What makes this converter attractive is that it has mounting ears and a built-in Micro USB cable and connector. It plugs into your Raspberry Pi without the need for adapters or extra cables.

perma-proto breadboard

Perma-Proto Half Size Breadboard

To assemble the various modules used by the Comvette system like the Piezo Beeper Module, the DS1307 Real Time Clock and the TEA5767 FM Radio Module you'll need a way to permanently mount and connect the modules. The Perma-Proto half size breadboard is perfect for this. It is big enough to hold several modules and small enough fit nicely into a compact space. The Comvette Project also uses this breadboard for the Line-Level Audio Switch and the Power Manager.

diodes

1N4001 Diodes

These are common 1N4001 power blocking diodes. They are great for kickback protection to safely discharge the spikes generated when the magnetic field collapses in a relay coil. Without kickback protection, MOSFET modules used to operate relays can be damaged.

resistors

10K Ohm Resistors

These are common 10K Ohm, 1/4 Watt, 5%, Carbon Film Resistors (pack of 100). They are great for use with microcontrollers that need a pull-down resistor on their GPIO pins. Without pull-down resistors, a GPIO pin may remain active (high) after power has been removed. With a pull-down resistor, any residual power is drained from the GPIO pin allowing it to return to its inactive (low) state when power is removed.

ds1307 real time clock

DS1307 Real Time Clock

The Raspberry Pi does not have a built-in hardware clock. It sets its clock by contacting an internet time service. So what happens when your Raspberry Pi is on-the-road and doesn't have an internet connection? Well, it runs but its clock will be wrong. This little clock module provides the Raspberry Pi with a real-time hardware clock. It communicates with the Raspberry Pi via the I2C bus.

hdmi audio extractor

HDMI to HDMI + AUDIO (HDMI Audio Extractor)

The HDMI to HDMI + AUDIO (HDMI Audio Extractor) allows the audio portion of an HDMI source to be extracted from an HDMI source. Most Raspberry Pi HDMI touch-screen displays don't have built-in speakers to play the audio portion of the HDMI source. So, to access the audio an HDMI audio extractor is needed.
