Comvette Wiring Diagram

I've had some requests to see the back-end of the Comvette system as it exists in my car. It is still very much a work in progress. The front-end (the Comvette head-unit chassis) is complete and functional. And has been for quite a while. But the back-end... Well, that's a different story.

The back-end is where all the interesting stuff happens. That's where I try out various ideas for software and hardware. It needs to be accessible so that I can modify, tweak and experiment. Here's a picture of the back-end of the Comvette system in my car:

As you can see, all of the wiring for the back-end is emerging from the passenger-side storage compartment. I intend to mount everything that you see onto a chassis/capsule that will drop into the storage compartment. This should make it easy to access everything by lifting the capsule out of the storage compartment when necessary. In the meantime, everything is exposed and available for easy modification.

I want to take this opportunity to provide a full wiring diagram of Comvette as it currently exists.

I've been avoiding posting the Comvette wiring diagram because I didn't have a tool available to generate the wiring diagram. But I finally had the time to learn about "LibreOffice Draw" which came with my copy of Ubuntu Linux which is running on my desktop computer. I wanted something that would let me draw some basic shapes and then connect them together with lines that would stay attached when I moved any of the shapes to a new position. LibreOffice Draw gave me the ability to do that. The down-side is that I had to learn enough about LibreOffice Draw to get the job done.

So, what you see below is the end result. I think it came out pretty good and it should be easy to update if and when changes are needed.

You can download the actual LibreOffice Draw file, or a .PDF version, or view the file as a .JPEG image. The choice is yours.

Download Comvette Wiring Diagram (23.1 KB .odg file)
Download Comvette Wiring Diagram (27 KB .pdf file)
Download Comvette Wiring Diagram (315 KB .jpg file)

If you download the LibreOffice Draw .odg file, you will find that there are several layers in the drawing. One for the components and several more for the various classes of wiring: 12 Volt, 5 Volt, 3 Volt (GPIO), HDMI, Audio, USB, I2C, and RF.

I found that being able to show only the layer you are interested in helps make sense of this somewhat complex rats-nest of wires.
